But since that's on the Atlantic Rhythm & Blues box set which I also own, I didn't mind that too much. Disc one has the songs you hear on oldies stations. The lesser known but still essential tracks covering the Atlantic era (Kinda Blue) and the post-Atlantic era (Finger Snapping Good) are on discs two and three with the volume titles inspired by the Stax label designs of those two eras/5(42).

Vinyl Me Please is reinventing the box set experience, through the music of eight of this storied label's world-changing artists. The Story of Stax Records, a Stax Anthology for the ages, contains eight LPs, each linked to an exclusive podcast episode and housed in "secrecy sleeves" that can be opened at specific points as you listen.

Over the course of three discs, this Spectrum box set appears to define soul music as nearly any performance of the last half of the 20th century that features emotion -- "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" by James Brown deserving entry just as much as "Do That to Me One More Time" by Captain & Tennille.5/

Soul compilations are 10 a penny, but mostly the same within a track or two of same old stuff. This one is different with a mix of classic soul, motown numbers and some great Northern tracks too, but importantly largely ones you don't see so often elsewhwhere/5(64).

"Soul Finger" is the first single released by R&B group the leiweaniniturlereehephanaradoct.infoinfo was issued by Stax Records on the Volt Records label on April 14, The song was written by the Bar-Kays while they were rehearsing with Norman West to perform a cover of J.J. Jackson's "But It's Alright". It begins with the melody of the popular children's song "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and then cuts into the main.

The most obvious is the inclusion of a studio audience (described variously as a bunch of neighborhood teens, the band's friends and families, or the staff of Stax Records), who provide a party-like background of yells and finger-snaps, occasionally breaking into chants of "Soul finger!" throughout the song.

The legendary Memphis soul label Stax's legacy is well-represented by this four-CD box set, which manages to do what many similar box retrospectives don't. That is to provide a well-balanced overview of a genre of music that mixes the essential hits with many noteworthy yet lesser-known singles and rarities, coming about as close as possible to pleasing both the collector and the less intense.
